Signing an Authorization card. (A-cards)

Only shows interest in a union.

Its the only way to show enough union support to file for election through the nlrb.

It does not mean you joined the union or voted for the union and does not obligate you to pay union dues

A-cards are 100% confidential and will not be shared with the company at any time. It is illegal for the company to ask if you signed a card and attempt to keep you from signing one.

A-cards also provide protection under the law as a supporter of the union to participate free from threats and intimidation.

You and your coworkers have a legal right to form a union. Talk to a union organizer, declare yourself a union supporter, assist in forming a union, sign an A-card in support of a vote to unionize.

When we collect enough cards we will have an election – PERIOD –guaranteed.
Don’t let management mislead you about the authorization card.

Know your rights!

First Contract.

When you win the election to have a union, newly organized workers secure valuable benefits in their first contract.
These include a grievance procedure, the ability to request information, job posting, bidding arbitration, and seniority protection – just to name a few. Negotiations are starting with what you have today, not a blank piece of paper.

Secure Your Future! Organizing is making the effort to secure your future.

Dues.  Many ask what their dues will get them. The list is long, but most folks are primarily concerned with financials. The fact is union workers, when compared to non-union workers, have higher wages and access to better benefits.

Dues are covered in the increase in wages and bonuses negotiated. The dues are how we support the cost of getting ahead. NOT the other way around.

We only have to go as far as the Pratt East Hartford Union contract to demonstrate the difference. Your co-worker at the Pratt location in East Hartford would have stopped paying dues and voted out their union if it did not benefit them.

Building on Existing Relationships

The IAM already represents 6,000 Pratt & Whitney workers in Connecticut, Michigan, Florida and California. These union members are able to sit down with management and negotiate over work issues that matter to them. Don’t you deserve the same input and oppurtunity to negotiate? Why wait? What are you losing out on every year by leting the company decide what your needs are. Click here to learn more about collective bargaining or on the cover of the IAM-P&W contract cover to see highlights of the latest contract effective 5/2/22 in the Connecticut facilities.

What’s an Authorization Card?

You can expect a lot of misinformation from management about the authorization card. During third shift on October 25th, they  FALSELY claimed you start paying dues once you sign an a-card. Paying dues doesn’t begin until you ratify a first contract and complete a membership application. The authorization card’s sole purpose is to show the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) there is sufficient interest in a union to hold a secret-ballot election. They are NOT membership applications and they are NOT shown to the company. In fact, it is illegal for the company to ask to see them.

Why the IAM

Respect on the Job

A union-negotiated contract puts rules in place that allow you to do your job without fear of retaliation or unjust treatment. If you feel those rules have been broken, you have the legal right to appeal through a grievance procedure. As a result, everyone is treated with respect. Not just management’s chosen favorites.

Consistency

A union will bring consistency to the workplace. Things like raises, medical benefits, vacation and other work rules will be determined through negotiations with Pratt & Whitney. These things won’t be able to be changed on a whim by management. It’s objective and it’s predictable, so you can plan for your future.

Strength & Security

With a voice on the job comes strength and security. Managers will no longer be able to make the rules up as they go—dodging your concerns and treating you like second class citizens.  The IAM will stand shoulder-to-shoulder with you to make sure it’s enforced. That’s peace of mind. That’s strength.

Be Prepared…

Most companies choose to run an anti-union campaign once they find out their workers are looking to make their voice heard via collective bargaining. Check out this video to learn more about what you can expect out of the anti-union campaign directly from a former union buster.
